A client from Chesterfield recently contacted Extreme Audio to inquire about a 2018 Toyota Tacoma Stealthbox and source unit upgrade. We talked to the client about the way the system sounds and what he wanted to improve. The idea of adding a subwoofer and upgrading the radio made perfect sense. With the upgrade plan in place, we scheduled an appointment and placed an order for the subwoofer system.
Toyota Tacoma Stealthbox
Adding a subwoofer to a factory audio system is easily the fastest way to improve the overall performance of a sound system. Having a subwoofer means that the small speakers in the car don’t have to try to reproduce bass frequencies. This reduces how hard they have to work and dramatically improves the way they sound.
The client chose the JL Audio SB-T-TACDCG3/10TW3 Stealthbox as a solution for his vehicle. Stealthboxes are vehicle-specific subwoofer systems designed and fabricated by JL Audio in Miramar, Florida. Each enclosure is created from fiberglass in custom-made molds before being bonded together. JL puts significant effort into choosing finish materials that match the interior of each subject vehicle as closely as possible.
This enclosure is home to a single 10TW3 subwoofer and fits against the back wall of the truck behind the passenger-side rear seat. The client chose a JL Audio JX500/1D amplifier to power the subwoofer. We installed the amp under the passenger seat of the truck.
Pioneer Multimedia Receiver Upgrade
The client wanted improved smartphone connectivity in his Tacoma. He chose a Pioneer AVH-2300NEX multimedia receiver with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as the solution. If you haven’t experienced CarPlay or Android Auto, you will want to check them out. These systems use the voice recognition features built into Apple and Android-based smartphones to make phone calls, send text messages and choose the music you want to hear. You can even get turn-by-turn navigation instructions that include real-time traffic information to almost any destination in North America, including Alaska, Canada and Mexico.
We used an iDatalink Maestro RR integration module to allow the factory-installed SiriusXM Satellite radio tuner and USB ports to work with the new radio. A backup camera on the rear of the vehicle makes parking and maneuvering the truck safer.
We also added a 2.3 amp USB charging port to the vehicle. This high-current USB connection makes charging a smartphone quick and easy.

After a few hours of work, we had installed the Toyota Tacoma Stealthbox and new radio. We gave the client a demonstration and he was amazed at how much the sound improved.
