Extreme Audio in Mechanicsville and Midlothian has been a leader in driver safety products since the category began. Among the most exciting categories we sell are blind spot warning systems. These are products designed to alert you to vehicles in your blind spot while you’re driving up the road. They come in two distinctly different technologies.
Sensor-based Systems
The first type of system is a sensor-based design. Two radar sensors get hidden inside your rear bumper and detect vehicles that creep into your left or right blind spot. The operation is very simple. When a vehicle enters your blind spot, a visual indicator starts to blink inside your car, truck or SUV on the side where the sensor is located. If someone comes up on your left side, the left indicator illuminates. If they come up on your right side, the right indicator illuminates. If you engage your turn signal while someone is in your blind spot on that side, an audible alert sounds to help prevent you from moving into the other driver’s lane.
It’s important to mention that many inferior sensor-based blind spot systems are on the market that use parking sensors to detect objects. They don’t work properly, Extreme Audio won’t sell or install them, and we highly suggest you stay away from them. Our systems use the same technology that new car manufacturers are using.
Camera-based Systems
The second type of blind spot system we offer is a camera-based system. Our team installs small cameras to the bottom of your side view mirrors, aimed at your blind spot. Inside your vehicle, the camera image goes live whenever you turn on the corresponding blinker. When you activate the left blinker, you see the image from the left camera. Activate the right blinker, and you see the right camera image.
We have four ways to give you a monitor that will display the camera images.
- A replacement rearview mirror with an integrated LCD monitor is a popular choice for many people, since it puts the image in a logical location for you.
- If your vehicle has a color screen in the dash, we can often use it to display the camera image for you, giving you a factory-looking system.
- If you have a vehicle with some age to it and would like to upgrade the technology, a replacement in-dash stereo system may be perfect for you. The color screen can display the blind spot cameras and a backup camera, and give you Bluetooth for hands-free calling and music streaming. You can even gain exciting technologies like Apple CarPlay and Google’s Android Auto.
- Standalone monitors are a good choice for someone who owns a commercial vehicle or can’t use one of these three choices.
