A client from Midlothian recently visited Extreme Audio in hopes of improving the performance of the stereo in his 2013 Hyundai Veloster. After talking about what he hoped to improve, we offered him the chance to audition several of the upgrades we have available. He was immediately impressed by the improvement in clarity, bass extension and output we could offer, and made an appointment for us to begin the upgrade process.
Audiofrog Speaker Upgrade
We based the new stereo system for this Veloster around a set of Audiofrog GB-Series tweeters and midrange drivers. We installed a pair of the GB10OE 1-inch tweeters in the factory locations near the door handle levers. These tweeters are functionally identical to the GB10 but have a custom mounting solution that’s smaller and easier to fit into tight spaces.
We made a set of plastic mounting adapters to facilitate the integration of a pair of GB60 6.5-inch mid-woofers into the factory midrange location. We added sound deadening to the adapters to act as a gasket for the speakers. We finished the door upgrades with a set of Fast Rings to seal the speaker mounts to the door grilles so that all the sound energy will feed into the vehicle.
ARC Audio Amplifier and System DSP
The upgraded sound system uses the factory-installed radio as a source. We installed an Axxess AX-DSP to the outputs of the radio so that we could apply crossovers, signal delay and amplitude calibration to each speaker in the system using the 31-band equalizers. The six outputs of the processor feed an ARC Audio XDi-850.5 five-channel amp. The amp and processor are mounted under the passenger seat, so they don’t take up any room in the vehicle. The tweeters, woofers and a subwoofer each have dedicated channels on the amp so that we could maximize the tuning capabilities of the digital signal processor.
Vehicle-Specific Subwoofer Upgrade
The next step was to install a JL Audio Stealthbox SB-HY-VELOSTR/10TW3 subwoofer enclosure in the cargo area. This fiberglass enclosure is molded to fit the right rear corner of the vehicle and includes a single 10-inch 10TW3 subwoofer.
Veloster Stereo System Upgrade
The final step in this Veloster stereo upgrade was for our team to configure the settings on the amplifier and the signal processor to produce a detailed and natural frequency response and a realistic soundstage across the front of the vehicle. The client returned to the store, excited to hear the new system. He was thrilled with the results! If you’re considering upgrading the audio system in your car, drop by Extreme Audio in Midlothian or Mechanicsville, or send us an e-mail using our contact page.
