The owner of this Mosely, VA-based 2016 Berkshire XLT RV contacted Extreme Audio about making some audio and lighting upgrades to his vehicle. The RV includes an LCD TV mounted on an exterior panel for watching shows when parked. The problem was, nobody could hear the sound. The client had also seen some of the LED under-vehicle illumination projects we have done and wanted to add a little something similar to his RV. We looked over the vehicle, took some measurements and created a proposal for the client. He approved, so we schedule a date for the installation to begin.
Berkshire XLT Lighting Upgrade
We do a lot of work with RGB lighting. These weather-resistant strips contain sequences of red, green and blue LEDs grouped together. A dedicated controller allows the client to choose the color he wants by varying the signal to each of the LEDs. The client can choose orange, violet, yellow and even white by simply pressing a button on the remote control. He also can initiate one of seven different patterns where the colors morph from one to the next. As you can see from images, the effect is amazing.
We used a total of 64 feet of lighting, the color control module and an RGB amplifier. Because of the extensive length of the lighting, we had to be able to provide extra current. We protected all of the wiring to the LEDs with split loom, and soldered and taped all connections for maximum reliability.
Entertainment System Improvement
We created a set of “sound bars” on either side of the TV. We installed four Arc Audio XDi402 4-inch coaxial speakers on each side on a wooden spacer wrapped in carpet. A custom grille conceals the speakers when they are in use, but is easily removable for servicing.
We powered the speakers with an Alpine MRV-V500 five-channel amplifier. The subwoofer channel of the amp runs a pair of JL Audio 10W0-4 subwoofers. The subwoofers are mounted in one of the lower storage compartments and fire downward for a little extra loading effect.
We installed a switch that lets the client select the TV as the audio source or a JL Audio MBT-RX Bluetooth receiver. The vehicle owner can pair his phone, a tablet or a laptop to the receiver to enjoy whatever programming he chooses.
The client was thrilled with his Berkshire XLT RV lighting and sound system upgrades. He was excited to get on the road and show his friends.
