A client from Chester recently visited Extreme Audio to talk about a 2013 Porsche 911 Carrera S backup camera system. Rearward visibility in the cabriolet (convertible) 911 is somewhat limited. He wanted to be sure he wouldn’t back into anything or anyone while maneuvering. The client wanted a camera system that would look and function as though it had been installed on the assembly line and not like a bolted-on afterthought. After looking at the vehicle, we did some research and came up with a plan that would give the client exactly what he wanted.
911 Carrera S Backup Camera
The heart of the camera system is a NAV-TV PCM3.1 XG-CAM interface. The interface communicates with the factory-installed PCM3.1 source unit using the CAN data network. The XG-CAM interface works with 2010 and newer Panameras, 2011 and newer Cayennes, 2011 and newer 991 chassis code 911s and the Macan when equipped with the CDR+ factory radio.
The interface includes two composite video inputs. One input is dedicated to the rear vision camera and the other can be used for a forward-facing camera. The image from the rear camera input is displayed automatically on the factory radio screen when the transmission is put in reverse. If the client decides he wants to add a front camera, we can install that and a control switch for him at any time.
Voxx Rear Vision Camera
We chose a Voxx Electronics ACA501 universal mount camera for the Porsche. This premium camera features a high-definition CCD image sensor that provides excellent performance in bright sunlight and in pitch-black darkness. The wide 180-degree field of vision ensures that the client can see objects anywhere behind the vehicle. We mounted the camera to the bumper lip above the license plate and ran the wiring safely and securely through the vehicle.
Another Happy Extreme Audio Client
With the 911 Carrera S backup camera installation complete and tested, it was time for the client to pick up his car. He was thrilled with the results. A few days after taking the car home, he posted the following on our Facebook page: “I ‘needed’ a backup camera in my Carrera S Cab and wanted it to look and act like it was done at the factory. Well, I got exactly that! Great recommendation on which products would work best. Absolutely pristine install — no evidence at all that the backup system was added later! In summary — Absolutely Fantastic!”
