A client from Chesterfield recently contacted Extreme Audio to inquire about upgrading the radio in his Jeep Wrangler to include Apple CarPlay. After seeing all the Jeep-specific upgrades available from Alpine, the client decided that new speakers, a subwoofer and a five-channel amp would make driving his off-roader much more enjoyable.
Alpine Restyle Jeep Radio Upgrade
The project started with removing the factory radio and trim panel from the dash of the Jeep to make way for an Alpine i209-WRA. This radio features a massive 9-inch touchscreen, a new trim piece with integrated control buttons and both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Alpine also includes an ADS Maestro vehicle integration module with this kit to connect with the Jeep’s data network. The interface enables the driver to use the steering wheel controls to operate the radio and offers access to vehicle speed, engine rpm and tire pressure information.
Jeep-Specific Speakers and Subwoofer
The next step in the upgrade was to replace the dash and overhead soundbar speakers with two sets of Alpine SPV-65X-WRA component speakers. These speaker systems are also Jeep-specific and include all the mounting hardware and connectors we need to integrate them securely into the vehicle. Having the same speakers in the front and overhead locations allows for natural and balanced sound from the audio system.
One of the most important aspects of this Jeep upgrade is the subwoofer. We installed an Alpine SBV-10-WRA subwoofer system under the front passenger seat. This system features a 10-inch subwoofer in a custom enclosure that bolts directly to the Jeep without any modifications. Having the subwoofer in the front of the Jeep ensures amazing bass response, even when the windows are down or the roof is removed.
ARC Audio System Amplifier
To give the new speakers and the subwoofer the power they need to sound amazing, our team mounted a five-channel ARC Audio X2 850.5 amplifier under the driver’s seat. This amp delivers up to 85 watts of power to each of the front and rear speakers and an impressive 400 watts of power to the under-seat sub.
We finished the installation by adjusting the crossovers and sensitivity controls on the X2 850.5 amplifier to work with the speakers in the vehicle and the new Alpine head unit. Many shops don’t give this last step the attention it deserves. Getting these settings right is crucial to the overall performance and reliability of the new audio system.
