When it comes to marine and powersports applications, the staff at Extreme Audio in Mechanicsville and Midlothian choose JL Audio MX amplifiers. These amplifiers are designed to produce great sound from an extremely compact package that fits where conventional amps are simply too large. Let’s look at what separates these compact amplifiers from other products on the market.
Water-Resistant Design
Unlike the rest of the compact amps on the market, JL Audio designed the MX-series amplifiers with a cast aluminum heatsink with a sealed bottom panel to prevent water from entering the amplifier. These amplifiers carry an IPX6 water-intrusion rating. This IPX6 rating means that the amplifiers can handle being sprayed with water by powerful jets without any infiltration into the chassis.
The power wire, speaker wire and signal connections are molded into water-resistant connections on the left end panel of the amplifier. The MX-series amplifiers in your boat, personal watercraft, side-by-side or motorcycle are designed to deliver reliable performance under the toughest challenges.
High-Efficiency Design and Amazing Features
The MX amplifiers make use of the company’s ultra-efficient NexD switching technology to provide lots of power to your speakers while being easy on the vehicle’s electrical system.
The MX280/4 and MX500/4 four-channel amplifiers are bridgeable to two channels for high-power applications. Each amplifier features independent front and rear sensitivity controls and an adjustable high- or low-pass crossover that is adjustable from 35 to 300Hz. The amplifiers can handle up to 4 volts of input signal from a source unit or processor and as much as 15V when switched to high-level input mode. The high-level mode allows us to connect the amp to the outputs of a factory source unit to upgrade the performance of almost any audio system. These full-range amplifiers also include a two- or four-channel signal input switch that eliminates the need for Y-cables.
Designed to power subwoofers, the MX300/1 is one of our favorite amplifiers in these applications. This amp features the same 4- and 15-volt signal input capabilities and includes an adjustable low-pass filter, infrasonic filter and a variable bass boost adjustment. The M300/1 is compatible with the optional M-RBC-1 remote level control.
High-Power Amplification Solutions
Though there are five amplifiers in the MX series, we use the MX280/4, MX500/4 and MX300/1 the most often. The MX280/4 will produce 50 watts per channel into a four-ohm load and 70 watts into a two-ohm load. The amp produces 140 watts per channel when configured to drive only two four-ohm loads. If you need a little bit more power, the MX500/4 provides 70 watts per channel into four ohms, 125 watts into two ohms and can be bridged to provide 250 watts. The MX300/1 subwoofer amp serves up a meaty 300 watts into a two-ohm load to make sure that your music comes through loud and clear.
