A 2015 BMW 335i owner from Chester recently contacted the team at Extreme Audio to inquire about adding a backup camera system to the vehicle. The client wanted the camera to help his son maneuver and park the vehicle more safely. After a quick inspection of the vehicle, we put together a camera package that would work just as if it had come with the car from the factory in Bavaria.
BMW Backup Camera Upgrade
We started by installing a Rydeen CM-DUO wide-angle camera on the trunk lid of the vehicle. The camera is placed just above the license plate. The body of the camera is wedge-shaped so that the lens points down at an angle, which helps ensure that the camera image displays items immediately behind the vehicle.
In-Dash Display Integration
The coolest part of this installation is the way that we integrated the new camera into the infotainment system display. A company called NAV-TV makes an interface computer designed specifically for BMW vehicles. The computer feeds the video signal from the camera into the factory display. The interface also monitors the vehicle’s data network so that it senses when the transmission is in reverse. When it detects the reverse signal, it triggers the display to switch to the camera. The system also monitors the steering wheel angle sensors so that it can overlay dynamic parking lines on the screen to show the anticipated path of the vehicle.

With the backup camera system installed and calibrated, we let the client know he could pick up his BMW 335i. We showed him where we had mounted the camera and demonstrated how the system worked. He was thrilled with the way the system functioned and was impressed with the clarity of the camera image.
