A client from Roanoke reached out to the team at Extreme Audio to inquire about upgrading his wife’s 2016 BMW 228i with CarPlay and a blind-spot monitoring system. She wasn’t feeling comfortable driving the vehicle on the freeway, and he hoped that improving the vehicle’s safety technology might help.
BMW Blind-Spot Monitoring System Upgrade
The first order of business was to integrate a USA Spec BSM 200 blind-spot monitoring system into the car. After pulling the car into our bay, our technicians removed the rear bumper cover and measured mounting locations for the pair of microwave sensors. These sensors mount in the car’s rear corners to monitor the area on either side of the vehicle. The system automatically switches to a cross-traffic alert mode when it detects that the vehicle is backing up. In either mode, the driver is alerted to another vehicle’s presence by a pair of LED indicators mounted at the A-pillars base. In the regular blind-spot mode, the system produces a loud warning beep if the turn signal is activated when another car is alongside the BMW.
ZZ-2 CarPlay Add-On Interface
Adding smartphone integration to late-model vehicles has been popular lately. The ZZ-2 IT3-NBT includes both CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity with the option of wireless Wi-Fi connectivity. As soon as the driver enters the vehicle and starts the engine, her phone will pair with the system automatically. She can use voice commands to make phone calls, send text messages or ask for navigation directions using Apple Maps, Google Maps or Waze. The ZZ-2 system integrates with the factory LCD screen on the dash and works with the steering wheel and center console infotainment system controls.
