A client from Midlothian recently contacted the team here at Extreme Audio about upgrading the stereo system in his new-to-him Jeep Wrangler. He has upgraded sound systems in all of his vehicles and wanted his new off-roader to have great sound. The upgrade needed to withstand being exposed to water and mud since he plans on driving through creeks and streams. After looking at the vehicle and talking to the client about his existing sound systems, we put together an upgrade to deliver the performance he wanted.
Jeep-Specific Radio Upgrade
The first step in the upgrade was to remove the factory-installed radio to make way for an Alpine i209-WRA multimedia receiver. This Alpine radio features a large 9-inch display and includes a new mounting trim piece with integrated buttons and air vents that give the dash a modern look. In keeping with the theme of durability, the face of this radio has an IP-53 rating, making it both splash and dust-proof. Additionally, the radio has both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration. The included iDatalink Maestro integration module allows the radio to communicate with the computers in the car to display dashboard information. We also installed one of the Alpine HCE-TCAM1-WRA backup cameras on the vehicle’s rear to make parking safer.
Weather-Resistant Amplifiers and Subwoofer
We replaced the dash and overhead pod speakers with Alpine SPV-65x-WRA 6.5-inch component speaker sets. The client chose an Alpine SBV-10-WRA subwoofer enclosure that mounts under the passenger seat for bass. The subwoofer system features a 10-inch sub to deliver impressive bass output and low-frequency extension.
We installed a pair of JL Audio MX-Series amplifiers under the passenger seat to power the speakers. An MX500/4 provides 70 watts of power for the front and rear component speakers. An MX500/1 can deliver up to 500 watts to the Alpine subwoofer.
The client asked us to install a DV8 HT07FB42 Slantback hardtop on the Jeep to help cut down on noise in the vehicle and improve the performance of the heating and air conditioning system.
