The owner of this magnificent 2020 Four Winns H260 recently contacted Extreme Audio in Midlothian to ask about upgrading the audio system and adding lighting. He made it quite clear that he wanted people to see and hear the boat from the other side of the lake. We inspected the existing audio gear to see how it was wired, then proposed three upgrades to give him the performance he wanted.
JL Audio Marine Speaker Upgrade
The existing stereo system on the boat included three sets of JL Audio M3-Series marine speakers. One pair is in the bow seating area. The second set is on either side of the helm. The third set is on the stern of the boat by the swim platform. We added a fourth set of M3-650X-S-GM 6.5-inch marine coaxial speakers to the optional locations behind the bench seats at the rear of the cockpit. These speakers ensured that everyone on board could hear the music clearly. These new speakers are wired to the existing JL Audio amplifier.
Wet Sounds’ Biggest Tower Speakers Are Awesome
To handle the request of being audible across the lake, we suggested a set of the new Wet Sounds REV 12HD 12-inch coaxial tower speaker enclosures. These incredible speakers feature a massive 12-inch midrange driver and a high-output horn-loaded compression driver to deliver concert-quality sound, even more than 100 feet from the boat. We mounted the tower speakers to the outer corners of the wakeboard tower bar and added a set of ZX-W illuminated grilles for some extra flash.
A four-channel ARC Audio X2-600.4 amplifier powers the tower speakers. We wired that amp in a bridged configuration so that it would provide the speakers with at least 300 watts of power. We mounted the amp alongside the existing JL Audio amplifier and used Stinger marine-grade power wire to connect it to the battery. The JL Audio Media Master radio has a dedicated output zone assigned to the tower speakers so that the owner can control their output relative to the rest of the system.
Boat Lighting Looks Amazing
The last step was to install 11 Heise RGB LED rock lights around the boat’s interior to give it the look the client was after. An XK Glow XKChrome RGB controller controls the lights, so the owner can choose the colors or patterns he wants using an app on his smartphone. The lights are wired as two separate zones: one for walkway lighting and the second for accent illumination.
Virginia’s Best Marine Audio Upgrades
After about 25 hours of work, we had the sound system on this Four Winns H260 sounding amazing. A few of us stood on the swim platform to check out the new 12-inch REV speakers, and we were just about literally blown away by their output capability. The client loved the look of the lighting and was amazed by the audio system’s performance.
