Momento, a leader in developing and manufacturing high-quality dash cameras, recently introduced four new models. In this spotlight, we’ll examine the second most affordable solution, the MD-8100. Unlike the MD-8000, which includes a single forward-facing camera, the MD-8100 includes a secondary camera that we can install in the rear window to capture everything that happens behind your vehicle.
Momento MD-8100 Dash Camera
The MD-8100 is based on the same low-profile chassis as the MD-8000. The image sensor and lens are mounted in a small pod that can rotate up or down to provide the perfect viewing angle, no matter how steep or shallow your vehicle’s windshield is.
The MD-8100 also features the same Sony IMX-Series image sensor as the MD-8000. The camera is designed to capture video at 30 frames per second to ensure details are caught, even when something or someone passes by quickly.
The rear camera also uses a Starvis-Series image sensor and records at 1920×1080 pixels at 30 frames per second. It mounts with high-quality two-sided tape and can be angled to work with any rear window, from a pickup truck to an 1980s Camaro.

Dash Camera Features
Parking Mode is a popular feature with modern dash cameras. The issue with cameras from a few years ago is how much current they draw. Even 30 or 40 milliamps can drain a car battery significantly if the vehicle isn’t driving for a few days. The Momento M8 dash cameras forego the traditional method of monitoring the image sensor and, instead, use a radar transceiver to detect motion in front of the vehicle. This maintains excellent protection but dramatically reduces how much power the camera draws. You can leave your vehicle unattended for a week without concern over a dead battery.
The MD-8100 comes with a 32 GB memory card that is inserted on the side of the chassis. The card can be upgraded to a 256 GB unit to provide hours of storage.
Intuitive Interface Design
The MD-8100 starts recording automatically when you start your vehicle. A button on the front panel activates Wi-Fi allows you to download videos using the Momento Dash Cam Viewer app. You can also adjust camera settings from within the application. If you see something you want a video of while driving, press the event recording button. The camera will store video from 10 seconds before you press the button to 10 seconds after. Whether it’s a car accident or someone running a red light, you’ll have a clear video stored in a special folder on the memory card that won’t be overwritten when the card is full.
The new M8 cameras include voice recognition features to let you control the system without taking your hands off the steering wheel. You can say, “Hi, Momento,” then add “Save Video” to have it store the most recent information in a special folder. Other commands include “Enable Wi-Fi,” “Enable Privacy Mode,” and “Disable Mic.” The owner’s manual outlines all the options.

Interior Camera Upgrade
If you drive for Uber or Lyft or are a licensed taxi or limousine operator, you may want to consider adding the MD-IC6 infrared interior camera. This camera will capture video of the vehicle occupants, showing evidence of everything said and done while driving.
