A client here in Midlothian visited Extreme Audio to ask about upgrading the sound system in his 2022 Jeep Wrangler. As happens with most Jeep owners who care about the quality of their audio systems, this owner was looking forward to upgrading the sound system. Jeep might make a good off-road vehicle, but its audio systems aren’t impressing anyone. After this Jeep owner looked at and listened to some of the options for speakers, amplifiers and subwoofers in our showroom, we put together a package that would deliver the sound quality and system output capabilities worthy of this client’s expectations.
Alpine Jeep-Specific Speaker Upgrades
We started the project by removing the small speaker enclosures from behind the dash to make way for an Alpine SPV-65X-WRA 6.5-inch component. The new speakers are mounted in a set of Metra pods that bolt directly to the factory speaker locations. The tweeters from the Alpine set are mounted on top of the dash using the supplied brackets. If you like removing dozens and dozens of screws from dash trim panels, replacing the front speakers in a modern Jeep is right up your alley!
We removed the stock three- and four-inch speakers from the overhead soundbar and replaced those with a set of Alpine SPV-65-JLT components. This 6.5-inch speaker set includes new grilles that match the shape of the speaker pods.
JL Jeep Wrangler Subwoofers Bring the Bass
One of the most significant upgrades we made to this Jeep Wrangler was to install a pair of JL Audio Stealthbox subwoofer enclosures. The client chose the SB-J-JL4DPAS/10TW1-4 and the matching SB-J-JL4DDRV/10TW1-4 10-inch enclosures. The drivers are wired in parallel to the ARC Audio X2-1100.5 five-channel amp that we mounted under the driver’s seat. The Stealthbox enclosures fit between the rear seatbacks and the trim panel around the roof support bracket. Not only does this subwoofer system sound great, but the location doesn’t use up any of the storage space in the rear of the vehicle.
This ARC Audio amp can produce an impressive 150 watts of power per channel to the front and rear speakers, so there’s no fear of running out of juice. The mono subwoofer channel produces up to 500 watts of power for the pair of JL Audio subwoofers. We ran a high-quality 4-AWG power wire directly to the battery to feed the amp. Given that this is a Jeep, we used plastic spacers to lift the amp off the floor to help prevent it from getting wet.
The amplifier is connected to the factory-installed radio using a PAC AmpPRO AP4-CH41 interface. This computer module takes the fixed-level audio signal from the radio and decodes volume commands on the CAN network that would have gone to the factory amplifier. In short, it makes the stock radio work like an aftermarket solution, making it easy to add an amplifier and deliver excellent and predictable sound quality.
Virginia’s Jeep Stereo System Upgrade Experts
After a good day’s work, we had the new equipment installed in this JL Jeep Wrangler, and our team finished the crossover adjustment and level-setting process to ensure that the system would sound great and play loudly. The client returned to Extreme Audio, and we immediately went to the vehicle for a listen. He was thrilled with the improvement. The bass was now tight and solid with great extension. The mids and highs had no problem playing nice and loud with the prodigious power from the ARC Audio amplifier. In short, the client was thrilled!
