A client came to Extreme Audio for a Harley Street Glide radio upgrade. He had a problem with his factory radio, it would play sometimes, and other times not work at all. After we spent a little time troubleshooting, it became obvious the factory radio itself was bad. He had already replaced the factory speakers with a Hogtunes speaker upgrade, so he mainly wanted to replace the radio and getting things up and running again.
We installed a Sony DSX-M50BT “mechless” head unit with bluetooth. What “mechless” means, is that the radio has no CD player, and is primarily designed for working with iPhones, Androids, and other MP3 players. These types of units are great for motorcycles because there are no moving parts inside to be damaged by the vibration from the bike motor. This particular unit is also designed for Marine use, so if he inevitably gets caught in the rain, the radio will hold up to some moisture. We interfaced the new radio into the factory handlebar controls as well, so all the factory functions stayed intact.
If you have a Harley that the radio isn’t quite right in, or the sound isn’t how you would like it to be, swing by and check out the solutions we have for you! You can also contact us here if you would like to find out more about our motorcycle solutions.
Hi! I am active duty Army and stationed in Korea right now. I brought my 2012 Harley street glide over here with me and now my stereo is having problems like described in this article. I like the specs on the Sony DSX-M50BT. If I were to order one I would probably have to install it myself…what should I know if I were to do so?
Thanks for the comment! If you’re mainly wanting to change the factory radio the M50BT should do a good job. If you have handlebar controls, the Metra 99-9600 kit combined with a ASWC should do the trick!
