Glen Allen Audi Q5 Backup Camera Upgrade

The owner of this 2012 Audi Q5 contacted the team at Extreme Audio to ask about adding a backup camera. The client expected that a premium vehicle like the Q5 would have come from the factory with this crucial safety item. We would have expected the same, but as always, we had a solution. After checking with NAV-TV, one of our vehicle integration suppliers, we put together a camera and interface solution that would work perfectly.

The NAV-TV Audi Dynamic-INT Kit700 is designed to add a dedicated backup camera input signal to the MMi multimedia system in most 2009 through 2016 Audi vehicles. What makes the solution unique is that the interface module can extract steering wheel angle information from the vehicle CAN data network to overlay dynamic guidelines onto the camera image. The interface also allows for a forward-facing camera should the client want to add that in the future.

We also sourced an Audi-specific trunk handle with an integrated wide-angle camera. The handle and camera assembly mounts just above the license plate on the rear hatch. Our team ran the wiring for the camera through the factory wiring grommet at the top of the hatch and behind the trim panels and under the carpet inside the SUV so that everything remains concealed.

Once the camera was installed, we checked its alignment and ensured that the dynamic parking line overlay information was accurate. We reassembled the interior panels that had been removed to mount the interface and run the wiring, then let the client know the vehicle was ready to go.

When the client arrived at Extreme Audio, a member of our team gave him a tour of the installation and explained how the rear camera image displays automatically as soon as the transmission is put into reverse. He was very happy with the way the system worked and how seamlessly we integrated it into the vehicle. He couldn’t tell that it hadn’t been a factory-installed system.
