Decatur Client Upgrades Tundra with Audio and Accessories

Tundra AccessoriesA client from Decatur contacted Extreme Audio to inquire about upgrading the audio system and adding several accessories to his 2019 Toyota Tundra. We usually start by asking our clients what they like about the factory sound system. In this case, it became clear that we would be upgrading everything, including the source unit, to meet his expectations. The client explained the lighting upgrades he wanted and mentioned that he’d like to black out the front grille to match the new bumpers and side steps. Armed with a thorough understanding of his goals for the vehicle, our team put together a plan to provide solutions that would make him happy.

Alpine Halo Radio Upgrade

Tundra Accessories
The Alpine radio gives the client lots of technology at his fingertips.

Our project started with the removal of the factory radio and door speakers. We installed an Alpine iLX-F309 in the dash. This radio features a 9-inch WVGA display that is mounted to a floating panel that sits in front of the dash. Once installed, it mimics the look of the new Mercedes-Benz radios to offer a massive, easy-to-read interface. We used a Maestro RR module to interface the new radio with the data network in the truck to display information like engine speed, fuel level, vehicle speed and more. The RR interface allowed us to use the USB port at the bottom of the dash with the new radio.

Audiofrog Speaker Upgrade

Custom adapter plates were fabricated for mounting the tweeters.

The door speakers were upgraded with Audiofrog GS components.

The next step was to replace the front speakers with a set of Audiofrog GS-Series drivers. We made custom mounting adapters for a set of GS10 tweeters so they could be located in the factory-installed dash speaker location. A set of similar adapters allow the GS690 woofers to be mounted in the doors. We covered the adapters with a piece of Hushmat sound deadening, then added a Fast Rings foam gasket around the woofer. The gasket seals up against the door panel to help ensure that all the sound from the speaker enters the listening area.

JL Audio System Amplifier and Subwoofer

Tundra Accessories
JL Audio’s VXi series amplifiers include an onboard signal processor.

The processor indicator light serves to also illuminate the USB and subwoofer knob.

The new front speakers are powered by a JL Audio VX1000/5i five-channel amplifier. We mounted the amplifier under the driver’s seat. This amp can produce up to 75 watts of power to the speakers and an impressive 600 watts of power to the system subwoofer. The amp has a built-in digital signal processor that our team used to set crossovers, output levels and equalization for each speaker in the vehicle.

We added a JL Audio DRC100 remote to the amplifier to serve as a remote subwoofer level the control. The knob is mounted in the dash between the power outlet and the USB port. We located the preset indicator LED just above the knob.

For bass, we installed a JL Audio SB-T-TCMAX/10TW3 Stealthbox under the rear seat. This enclosure is home to a pair of 10TW3-D8 10-inch subwoofers and is finished in gray carpet that matches the interior and prevents any buzzes or rattles.

Compustar Remote Car Starter

Tundra Accessories
The Compustar system features smartphone control.

The client wanted a reliable, long-range remote car starter to warm up the truck on cold days. We integrated a Compustar CM-900 control module into the vehicle wiring and mounted the unit neatly inside the dash. As you can see, our technicians use automotive-grade fleece tape to prevent the new wiring from buzzing while the truck is in motion. We paired a two-way remote control to the brain and added the fob to his keychain. The system also includes a DroneMobile X1-LTE smartphone interface that works with an app on the client’s smartphone.

Tundra Lighting and Styling Upgrades

The front grille was wrapped in black vinyl.

A light bar was added to the rack.

Additional safety is provided via the auxillary brake light.

We wrapped the front grille in 3M matte black vinyl so that it matches the rest of the truck. To wrap up the project, we installed a set of Rough Country light pods and an LED light bar on the rear rack. We also added a Putco tail light bar just above the rear bumper.

Toyota Tundra Audio and Accessories Project

With the audio system installed and the DSP configured to create a realistic listening environment, we called the client and let him know that he could pick up his Tundra. He was thrilled with the sound system and loved the look of the front grille and the added lighting. If you are interested in upgrading your Tundra, drop by our store in Mechanicsville or Midlothian, or send us an e-mail using our online form.
