The owner of this 2022 Ford Bronco Big Bend visited Extreme Audio’s Midlothian location to ask about upgrading the sound system. We’ve worked on several Broncos over the last few years, putting together solutions to suit different performance levels. Based on the feedback from the client, we knew this Bronco would need new speakers, a high-power amplifier with an integrated DSP and a subwoofer. After the client listened to the speaker options on our display, he agreed with our proposal and scheduled an appointment for us to perform the upgrades.
Ford Bronco Speaker Upgrade
As we’ve often said, the speakers are the most critical component in any audio system. So we proposed replacing the speakers on the dash with a set of Audiofrog GS42 4-inch, two-way coaxial drivers. In addition, we suggested the Audiofrog GS60 woofers for midbass for the kick panel locations. The client loved how these speakers sounded on our display board and agreed they’d be an excellent upgrade for the vehicle. In addition, all of the speakers fit perfectly behind the factory grilles, making the installation neat and tidy.
Bronco-Specific Subwoofer Upgrade

The next step in enhancing the sound system in this Bronco was to install a subwoofer. The client chose the Stinger TXFBB12 enclosure, which is explicitly designed to bolt to the tailgate of the Bronco. The enclosure features a single 12-inch Phoenix Gold subwoofer and is finished in a durable, weather-resistant coating.
JL Audio DSP Amplifier
The system is powered by a JL Audio VX1000/5i five-channel amplifier that includes a digital signal processor. We mounted the amplifier to the metal frame under the rear driver’s side seat. This location keeps it out of the way while allowing it to stay cool. If we need to adjust the amp, connecting our computer is quick and easy and doesn’t require us to remove any of the vehicle’s trim panels.
This amp can provide up to 75 watts of power to the dash and kick panel speakers and 600 watts to the subwoofer. Most importantly, our team configured the digital signal processor in the amp to send only bass information to the subwoofer, midbass frequencies to the kick panel speakers and midrange, and high-frequency information to the dash speakers. We also set delays for each speaker so that the sound produced would arrive simultaneously at the listening position. This creates a natural and coherent soundstage that spans the width of the dash – much like you’d hear from a high-end two-channel home audio system.
Finally, we finished the processor calibration process by adjusting the equalizers on each speaker to compensate for the acoustics of the Bronco. We used a calibrated microphone to make frequency response measurements of each speaker in the system. The result is a smooth and natural frequency response, free of peaks or dips that take away from the natural sound of voices and instruments.
We used AudioControl LGD20 load-generating networks on the outputs of the factory source unit to prevent any unwanted high-frequency noise from getting into the system. In addition, the high-level inputs on the amplifier could handle all the voltage the stock source unit produced without needing an external integration solution.
The last element of the amplifier installation was to mount a DRC100 remote level control in the front of the vehicle and configure it in the DSP software to function as a subwoofer level adjustment.
We left the stock speakers by the rear swing gate connected to the factory radio to add a little fill and ambiance to the presentation.
