This client contacted Extreme Audio in Midlothian while researching 2014 Porsche Carrera 4s backup camera options. We invited the client to the store so we could inspect the vehicle and show him how we could provide a solution that would integrate with the car. Once we confirmed what equipment would work, we provided the client with a quote. He approved our plan, so we scheduled an appointment.
Installation Preparation
It isn’t necessarily harder for us to work on a European or luxury car, truck or SUV than any other vehicle here at Extreme Audio. That’s because we are fanatical about how we care for all of our clients’ vehicles.
After pulling the Carrera into our bay, we protected the edges of the rear fenders and bumper with 3M painter’s tape. We laid down two large moving blankets so that once we removed the rear bumper, we had a safe place to put it.
Porsche Carrera 4s Backup Camera Installation
We chose an ACA501 backup camera from Voxx Electronics for the Porsche. This high-resolution camera offers a 180 degree field of vision and can operate in light levels down to 0.1 Lux. The camera has an IP68 rating, which means that in theory, it can be submerged in up to 5 feet of water without damage. It should last for decades on the rear bumper of this Porsche. We located the camera directly above the license plate between the factory lights.
The next step was to run the wiring through the vehicle to the factory source unit. We protect all of our wiring with Tesa cloth tape, expandable nylon braiding or split loom tubing. How we protect wiring is as important to the reliability of our installations as how we mount equipment and make electrical connections.
OEM Source Unit Integration
We used a NavTV XG-CAM interface to feed the video signal from the camera into the Porsche PCM3.1 factory source unit. This interface handles the video integration, as well as automatic switching when the transmission is put in reverse.
The XG-CAM interface has a provision for a second camera and a manual trigger. If the client wants, we can add a parking camera to the front of the vehicle to protect him from curbs.
System Delivery
With all of the wiring secured, the vehicle reassembled and the system tested, it was time to turn this immaculate sports coupe back to the client. He loves his Porsche Carrera 4s backup camera and the way it is integrated into the car.
