An Ashland navigation client came in looking to replace his old Kenwood navigation radio that we installed here at Extreme Audio over 10 years ago. It was the old “flip out” style that fit, but never really looked like it was supposed to be there. Back in those days there were not many options for double din navigation systems. Also, it required a lot of custom work to make the few that did exist fit in the space there. Now that double-din navigation has become the new normal, he had a lot of good options to choose from.
There is also now a kit made to install a double-din sized radio into his Suburban. For all of you with a 1999-2002 Suburban, Tahoe, and Yukons, you may already know that your truck is set up with a “din and a half” sized radio. This odd size really restricts the options on radio replacement. Metra has now released a dash kit, and the options (and dash size) have finally opened up! This kit allows a double din sized radio to fit in the dash with no custom work, and it looks like it was made to be there. The new dash allowed for an easy installation of the Alpine INE-W957HD. Now the client had a great looking radio with all the latest technology.
