A client from Moseley recently contacted the Extreme Audio team to ask about upgrading the stereo system in his 2023 Ford Bronco Raptor. This heavy-duty SUV came with a B&O-branded sound system but it didn’t deliver the clarity, low-frequency extension or volume levels the client wanted. So after talking with him about some of the systems we’ve installed recently and auditioning several amplifier, speaker and subwoofer options in our showroom, we put together an upgrade package that we knew would sound amazing.
Ford Bronco Speaker Upgrade
The first order of business was to install high-quality speakers in the Bronco. We started by replacing the speakers in the pods by the tailgate with a set of Audiofrog GS42 4-inch coaxial drivers. These speakers bolt directly into the pods with no modifications, and their tweeter is shallow enough to fit behind the factory-provided grille.
The next step was to upgrade the dash speakers. We installed a second set of Audiofrog GS42 drivers in this location. Once again, the stock grilles fit overtop for a clean and tidy appearance.
The last speakers we needed to upgrade were the midbass drivers in the front kick panels. Again we turned to Audiofrog and used a set of their GS60 6.5-inch speakers. Before bolting the speakers in, we added some SoundShield sound deadening around and behind the mounting location to minimize vibrations. We also added some Dacron stuffing in the space behind the speakers to help absorb sound energy.
Custom JL Audio Subwoofer Solution
The client wanted the new sound system to deliver clear bass that could play relatively loudly. He didn’t want to sacrifice storage space in the cargo area. He’d already added a storage solution to the rear tailgate, so that location wasn’t available. Our fabrication team constructed a custom enclosure in the rear passenger side fender area. As you can see from the photos, the enclosure is somewhat complex, but the subwoofer needs adequate air volume to play low and loud.
We put the trim panel back in the corner of the cargo area, then created a vinyl-wrapped trim panel sandwiched between the JL Audio 10TW3-D4 subwoofer and the enclosure to ensure that nothing would buzz or rattle when the volume is turned up.
JL Audio DSP Amplifier Delivers Clean Sound

The audio system upgrade is powered by a five-channel JL Audio VX1000/5i amplifier with an advanced digital signal processor for system configuration and calibration. The front channels of the amplifier power the dash speakers, and the rear channels run the midbass drivers in the kick panels. The subwoofer channel can provide up to 600 watts of power to create bass that’s clear and clean. The factory-installed amplifier powers the rear speakers.
We installed an AmpPRO AP4-FD31 amplifier integration interface in the truck to extract a clean audio signal for the new amp, so we wouldn’t have to worry about picking up any noise or hiss.
The amp is mounted directly to the metal frame under the rear driver’s side seat. This location keeps it safe and secure, with plenty of airflow around the chassis to stay cool.
System Calibration Ensure Amazing Sound Quality

The last step in upgrading the stereo system in this Ford Bronco was to calibrate the output of the JL Audio VXi amplifier to deliver great sound. We used our AudioControl DM-RTA to measure the acoustic output of each speaker at the main listening position. Next, we adjusted the equalizer in the JL Audio amp so the system’s frequency response was perfect from both the left and right speakers and hit our target response curve. The result is a sound system that delivers a very lively presentation that spans the vehicle’s width and offers excellent imaging. Tonally, the system has warmth and impact with smooth and detailed midrange and high-frequency performance.
