A repeat client from Richmond e-mailed recently about improving his daughter’s 2011 Jeep Wrangler backup safety. She was going away for college, and he wanted to add a backup camera and some sort of navigation capability to it. They had read a bit about Apple CarPlay, and thought that seemed like the perfect option for her.
After going over various options we have for Jeep Wranglers, the clients decided that Pioneer’s AVH-4200NEX was a perfect match. Not only does it have Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capabilities, but it also has a slew of other features – HD radio, SiriusXM satellite radio, backup camera, Bluetooth USB and more.
One of the big “and mores” is the ability to integrate directly to the Wrangler’s computer through a device called an iDatalink Maestro. The iDatalink Maestro lets the driver check engine codes, tire pressures and more, right from the display of the radio.
Since the daughter wanted to keep the cover on her spare tire, we opted for a more traditional camera mounting location: on the bumper, underneath the tire. Now she can plug her phone in to use the navigation from her iPhone using the Apple Carplay interface, as well as see much better when backing up.
