One of our repeat clients from Glen Allen came to Extreme Audio asking for a major upgrade to his Ford F350 entertainment system. He wanted something that matched the stature of the truck – gigantic! We looked at the truck and discussed a few options, including his limits with respect to the project. Not all customers are willing to do what’s necessary to fulfill their requests. This client understood the plan that we proposed and was excited about getting started.
Bigger Is Better
We started the project by running Stinger power and ground wiring from the batteries to the interior of the truck to feed three JL Audio amplifiers. Stinger 4000 Series interconnects run up into the dash at the same time. We installed an Alpine X008U into the factory radio location in the dash. It seemed almost suspicious that this massive 8” DVD navigation system fit so perfectly into the truck, but we can credit that to the research that Alpine put into the design of their Restyle product offerings.
We installed an Alpine PKG-RSE3 on the roof of the vehicle that includes a 10.2” overhead monitor and two pairs of headphones, and connected it to the X008U. This system provides his rear seat passengers with entertainment of their own, even when the client is listening to the radio.
We also integrated a Rydeen HD Minicam into the Alpine head unit. We mounted the camera just above the rear license plate and angled it to make sure the client would be able to see everything going on behind him. The X008U automatically displays the camera image when the vehicle is put in reverse gear.
Never Too Much Power
For more power, we fed audio signals from the Alpine head unit to three JL Audio HD series amplifiers. Under the front seat is an HD600/4 four-channel amplifier that supplies the front and rear speakers. The other two amplifiers are both HD1200/1 units that will power the system’s subwoofers. In total, the system has 3000 watts of available power to make sure that, well, everything comes through loud and clear!
For the front speakers, we chose JL Audio C2-650X components . We installed the woofers from the set in the factory door speaker locations. The tweeters are mounted in custom mini-pods on the front door sail panels. An application of Line-X on both provides a consistent and durable finish. In the rear of the vehicle, we installed a set of C2-650 coaxial speakers. The factory rear door location serves as the home for this 2-way 6.5” speaker set.
Big Bass For A Big Truck
Where most customers are content with a few shallow-mount subs under or behind the seats of their pickup trucks, this client was different. He made sure that we understood he wanted lots of bass. We obliged his request with four JL Audio 13W3v3 subwoofers. These 13” subwoofers we made at home in what’s known as a blown-through: We fabricated a large, vented enclosure for the subwoofers and sprayed it liberally with Line-X truck bed liner to make it water-resistant. We then cut a large opening in the back wall of the truck and a matching opening in the wall of the bed. The enclosure sits in the truck bed and plays music through the opening. Is it subtle? No, not really. Is it awesome? Yes, it is!
We also created a custom trim for the enclosure opening, using stacked layers of MDF. A carpeted panel surrounds the cut-through and we brought it flush with layers of body filler and lots of sanding. We mounted the JL Audio HD1200/1 amps on either side of the cut-through. Because we wanted our client to be able to show off his system, we included red LED lighting inside the subwoofer enclosure, as well as behind the subwoofer amplifiers.
More Than A Few Accessories
While the vehicle was in our possession, we also installed a Compustar 7000 series remote starter and security system with a 901SS LCD remote kit. We further upgraded communication with a Compustar Drone Mobile cellphone interface. The client can lock, unlock, remote start or find the location of his vehicle at any time with his cellphone and the Drone Mobile app.
We installed a set of motorized Amp Research Ford Super Duty retractable BedSteps on the truck to make getting in and out of the big dually a little easier. White under-truck lighting makes it easier to see clearly to climb aboard once the sun goes down.
Satisfied Client Loves His New Ford F350 Entertainment System
We always get excited when our clients return to Extreme Audio to see their projects for the first time. With a build of this scale, the anticipation was almost overwhelming. The client loved the integrated look of the subwoofer enclosure and the tweeters. The massive Alpine head unit would make anyone smile on seeing the big, clear screen. Finally, it was time for the client to crank up the system. Shocked, amazed or simply blown away – all are great ways to express his response.
