Most modern vehicles now come equipped with a passive theft deterrent system that uses transponders embedded into your key. It is important to understand the basics of transponder key technology. Extreme Audio does not defeat the transponder key system when installing a remote car starter. Instead, we interface with them. Read along.
What Does A Transponder Key Do?
In its simplest form, your vehicle has a hidden antenna ring that goes around your key cylinder. When you insert your key in the ignition, the antenna ring picks up the signal from the transponder chip hidden in the head of the key, recognizes it, and allows the vehicle to start. So if you have a key with no transponder, or a key that has not been coded to the vehicle, you are not going to be driving anywhere. This is a very simple and effective tool to combat vehicle theft.
We Maintain The Integrity Of Your Vehicle’s Security
At Extreme Audio, we take your vehicle safety very serious. We do NOT defeat this security feature for a multitude of reasons. Imagine the conversation with an insurance investigator after your stolen vehicle is stripped, and then recovered. The investigator finds out you authorized someone to defeat that protection. How do you think the conversation is going to go from that point?
Properly Interfacing With A Transponder Key System
We have 2 different solutions to interface our remote starter to your vehicle’s transponder key system, but they both work the same way. Follow along in the scenario. Your vehicle is sitting outside minding its own business, and the transponder system is active. You now ask the vehicle to start. At that very moment, our system will send a signal to the transponder system telling it that there is an approved key in the vehicle, and it is OK to start. If at any point while remote started someone attempts to steal your vehicle, our system will shut the vehicle off and re-engage the transponder system. So if someone wants to steal your car, we are not going to make it any easier on them.
On most vehicles, we have a device that can be learned by the transponder key system as a spare key. On a small number of vehicles, we may need you to supply us with a key that can start the vehicle, and we will use it as part of our remote start installation. This is very rare with today’s advanced interface technology.
